Statement of intent

At Barlborough Primary School, we recognise that Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children of all abilities to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. We encourage children to explore ideas and meanings through the work of a range of artists and designers. Through learning about the roles and functions of art, they can explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures. The appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts enriches all our lives. Learning through and about the arts enriches the experience of studying while at school as well as preparing students for life after school. Arts subjects encourage self-expression and creativity and can build confidence as well as a sense of individual identity. Creativity can also help with wellbeing and improving health and happiness acting as an outlet for releasing the pressures of studying as well as those of everyday life. Studying arts subjects also help to develop critical thinking and the ability to interpret the world around us.

We teach a range of areas in the arts – Drawing, printing, textiles, collage, painting and 3d sculpture. Each academic year, children are taught 3 units of art and these are on a 2 year cycle. We ensure that there is sufficient progression throughout school, both in skills and in expected outcome.

Within these unit’s children explore a range of artists, learning about their lives, work and designing and creating their own work that is inspired by particular artists.
