Summer 2 Newsletter

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back after the holidays.  We have a long last term ahead of us, packed with lots of fun and exciting things! Our topic is ‘through the window’ which will include a trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and hopefully lots of work outdoors, weather dependent! Please see the attached topic web for a breakdown of what we will be focusing on in each subject.

Science targets
This half term we will be working on the topic of ‘plants’. During the unit these are the targets we will be trying to achieve:

Targets

Can I name a variety of common wild and garden plants?

Can I name the petals, stem, leaf and root of a plant?

Can I name the roots, trunk, branches and leaves of a tree?

Do I know the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees?

Phonics
Just a reminder that the phonics screening test will take place this term for year 1 children. Please ensure children are in school where possible. Any extra phonics work done at home would be beneficial and could make a huge difference. Thank you to the many parents who have already started phonics work at home.

Genre
This half term we will be going back to looking at a specific genre. Our genre this half term is poetry, as always children are welcome to bring in and share any books they may have.  We will be linking our literacy work to this genre and will be adapting and writing our own summer poems.

P.E.
P.E. will continue to take place on a Tuesday and Wednesday. It is really important that children have their kits on these days. A reminder that long hair should be tied up and earrings taken out or taped up.

Street Parties!

A few pictures from our history of street parties! We celebrated the end of the war with our bread butter and water. We then celebrated the Queens Coronation in 1953 with salmon paste sandwiches, lemonade, Victoria sponge cake and made newspaper hats. To finish our topic we used our D&T skills to prepare a tea party for our parents! We made our own hats to do a hat parade and linked this to enterprise and budgeting to buy the resources.

Newsletter Spring 2

Dear Parents/Carers,

This term we are going to be busy learning all about St Lucia, the second largest Caribbean island, through different subjects every day. I had to break the news that it would cost too much to visit but fortunately we can follow the adventures of Barnaby Bear! See attached: Topic Web to find out about what the children will be learning about this half term.    Our class assembly will be linked to our topic and will take place on Wednesday 23rd March. More details will follow.

Science Targets
Our Science topic this half term is ‘Animals - Humans.’ These are the targets that children will be working on.

Science targets

I can name the parts of the human body that I can see.

I can link the correct part of the human body to each sense.

Phonics

In the Summer term children will be expected to do a phonics screening test which is an official test set by the government. Any work at home on alien words will be a massive support to your child in preparation for this.  If you need any help or support with this please come and see me. We will also be concentrating on this for morning activity this half term as well as doing another mock screening test.

Author
This half term we will be focussing on the author, Nicola Davies. We will look at a range of her nature books in order to help us write our own non-fiction information pages.

P.E.
P.E will continue to take place on a Tuesday and a Wednesday this half term. It is so important that children have their kits in school on these days.

The day the monster trashed our school!

A few photos from the day the monster trashed our school!! Children had to do lots of detective work to find out what on earth had happened!! We then used this for our writing. Children dressed up as their Dojo monster for the launch of class dojo. Teachers also had a fun morning before children arrived at school

Celebrations

In RE we have been finding out about celebrations. To see how celebrations make people feel we had our own celebration. We celebrated being Year 1's with food, music and games!

Roald Dahl Day

We celebrated Roald Dahl day by dressing up and doing some fun craft work. We even followed Mrs Twit's instructions to make eyeball cakes!

Autumn 1 Newsletter

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to a new school year, I hope you have all had a fantastic Summer break! Our topic this term is ‘Roald Dahl meets Charles Dickins!’ and as many lessons as possible will be linked to this topic. I have created a topic web so that you can see what this topic will be covering.

Science Targets

I can observe and comment on changes in the seasons.

I can name the seasons and suggest the type of weather in each season.

I can explain what I have found out using scientific vocabulary.

English
If you do want to help with your child’s writing at home we are focusing on using finger spaces, capital letters and full stops correctly this half term. We will then move onto using ‘and’ to join ideas and a huge focus will be on joined handwriting. Every child is also placed in a phonics group to suit their ability in order for them to progress at their level. They will be learning new sounds and spelling patterns each week, ask them to share these with you, but please feel free to ask if you need further support or advice.

Spellings
Children will get 5 spellings a week; if they correctly spell all 5 then they will be rewarded with a team point. The spellings they receive will initially be the year 1 words and then will be linked to the phonics sound that they have been working on that week and they will be tested on a Friday. Any help you can give your children at home is greatly appreciated and makes a big difference in their writing.

Author
Each half term we will focus on a chosen author or genre. Our first author that we are going to be focusing on this half term is Roald Dahl; he is a very famous children’s author that is loved by adults too! We are happy to display or read in class any books children have by our author.

Homework
Children will have the first few weeks to settle into their new surroundings before homework is given. Homework will be given out on a Friday and is to be returned by the following Wednesday. The types of homework your child can expect are maths pages from a given homework booklet, handwriting, English and online homework on ‘I am learning’. Children will receive their own login details for this site. Your child may need support reading the task, but as the year progresses they should become more confident at having a go by themselves. You are welcome to work with them and let them know if an answer is incorrect, supporting them to correct it.
