Dearne Valley 2017 - The adventure begins!

Summer 2 Newsletter

We began this half term with a very exciting and interactive Viking Day, where our pupils played Viking games, dressed in armour, learned about battles and even traded Viking artefacts!  We will be learning about how the Vikings came to Britain, their settlements and famous sagas and legends.

Years 5 and 6 will also be busy preparing for their end-of-year production and are already learning their parts and songs.  If your child is in Year 6, please help them to practise their lines loudly, clearly and slowly!

We will also be preparing for transition to our new year groups for the Year 5s and to new schools for the Year 6s – an emotional time but full of new beginnings and opportunities!

Finally, our class has been taking part in ‘Mindfulness’ training, which aims to help our pupils be more aware of their emotions and reactions.  The lessons should enable our children to improve their decisions when under pressure or angry and to help them recognise when they are feeling these emotions so that they can begin to regulate them.  Look out for the meditation diary which we will be sending home…

I would like to begin by thanking both parents and children for the wonderful welcome they have given me, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with such amazing pupils and I can’t wait to begin our learning journey together!

This will certainly be a challenging half-term for our Year 6 pupils as they prepare for the SATs.  Please support your child by encouraging them to work on their revision books, iamlearning and any other homework that they may have.

Both Year 5 and Year 6 will also be working hard on their writing skills ready for their final assessments.  We are encouraging all of our children to particularly focus on their spelling skills, as these are vital to achieving ‘Expected’ in Year 6.  Please help them to practise at home!

Y6: Your child will usually receive homework every Friday to be handed in the following Wednesday.   However, this term homework will be a little different due to the SATs.  There will be normal homework this week but then there won’t be any in the week of the SATs. After the SATs, we will continue with the regular homework timetable (as above).  Instead of the usual spelling lists, your child will need to revise the Y5/6 common exception words (sent home this week) ready for their SATs and writing assessments.

PE Kit
This half term PE will be on a Thursday and Friday afternoon. Please ensure your child has appropriate kit in school on these days.  Hair needs to be tied back and jewellery and nail varnish must be removed.

If you have any questions or if there is anything I can do to help then please do not hesitate to ask!

The children are all working very hard at the moment and their attitude working towards the SATs is excellent.  It’s lovely to see so many children coming into the Hub at 8.30 to do extra revision.  Please try to encourage your child to come where possible, it is giving them valuable learning time.  If your child was given some revision books last half term, please work through these with your child where possible, encouraging them to work on the areas that they find difficult.

We will be making Anglo Saxon soup as part of our topic and inviting parents to an Anglo Saxon feast during the final week of term.  We will confirm the actual day as soon as possible.
