Summer 2 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

As we welcome in the 2016 Olympics we are going to turn our focus to Brazil as we study this amazing and vibrant country.  We will be studying the major cities as well as unlocking the secrets of the Amazon Rainforest and it’s multitude of exotic wildlife.  Importance will be placed on the Olympic Values as we learn about the games and this will be reflected in our PE sessions as we practise athletics and field games.

Literacy
This half term we will be focusing on stories from other cultures and poetry, as well as writing balanced arguments as we debate the impact of environmental change on the Amazon Rainforest.  Our reading targets are:

  • To be recognise where words are an exception to the usual spelling rules.
  • To recognise some different forms of poetry.
  • To identify features of different fiction genres.

Maths
As we bring together the year’s work, we will practise using a variety of methods to solve word problems, especially where pupils need to use more than one method to calculate the answer (two step problems).  This is the perfect opportunity for the Year 4 pupils to finish getting their Gold times tables awards (the national standard is to know all multiplication and division facts up to 12x12) and for the Year 3 pupils to get at least all of their Silver awards (especially after all that ‘chanting’ as we walk to the classroom) I know they can do it!

Science
Over the half term our pupils will continue studying ‘Animals including Humans’.  This time the focus will be on food chains, predators and prey as well as looking at the differences between the skeletons and teeth of various animals.

Other Subjects
Please see the attached topic web for information on all subjects, PE will continue to be taught on Mondays and Tuesdays (both outdoors).

Kelham Island

World Book Day!

Spring 2 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

We have a short but exciting half term ahead full of fun events and powered by our ‘Full Steam Ahead’ topic on the invention of the steam engine and how it fuelled the Industrial Revolution.

We will begin with our class trip to Kelham Island on Thursday 25th February, followed by lessons on understanding the production line, the development of the railways, the rise in child labour and finishing with our topic celebration on Monday 21st March.

There will also be two parents’ evenings this half term so look out for your appointment slip which will be coming out to you soon.

Literacy
We will begin this half term by reviewing explanation texts, which fits in perfectly with our studies on the industrial revolution.  Following this we will be writing persuasive speeches to present to our ‘class parliament’ on the subject of child labour as we learn about the harsh conditions in which children were forced to work.  Finally, we will enjoy reading and writing our own railway poems.  Our class book will be ‘Street Child’ by Berlie Doherty, which was based on the true story of an orphaned child who inspired Dr Bernardo to create his first children’s home.  We will also be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 3rd March, so remember to think of a character to dress up as!

Maths
Our focus this half term will be on using and applying the four calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to word problems and investigations.  The children have been learning both mental and written methods and they will practise using the correct method for different types of problems.

We will also be learning how to read and interpret data from tally charts, pictograms, bar charts and line graphs.  Through this the children will review their knowledge of time, length, weight and capacity.

*Please help your child practise telling the time from analogue clocks as often as possible!*

Science
Over the half term our pupils will be studying ‘Changes in State’ from solids to liquids to gases and the processes that each goes through as it changes.  We will be conducting different experiments to deepen our understanding of these processes and looking at how they were used to create the first steam engine.

Other Subject
Please see the attached topic web for information on all subjects, PE will continue the same as last half term.

Topic News
Over the next few weeks the Wise Warriors will be learning about the geographical similarities and differences between the cities of Sheffield and Barcelona. The children have already begun the new topic by taking part in a football match between Sheffield and Barcelona.

We will also look at daily life in both cities and how our cultures are different.  This includes learning about famous artists, cultural events and famous food!

Reading
Once again I would like to invite volunteers to our class to hear children read; we currently have no parent helpers and your support would be a huge help in enabling us to hear children read more frequently!  Please let me know if you are able to help or leave your details with the office.

Below are your child’s reading targets – these will be worked on in individual reading, guided reading and whole class reading activities:

Could

I can identify themes and conventions in a wide range of books

Should

I can recognise the use and effect of patterned language in a text.

Must

I can use the context of a sentence to help me read unfamiliar words.

Maths Targets
We will be improving our understanding of place value and number and then focus on using and applying the four calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to solve problems.  We will also revise our understanding of fractions, the properties of shapes and measuring length.

Science Targets

I can describe the function of different parts of flowing plants and trees.

I can explore and describe the needs of different plants for survival.

I can explore and describe how water is transported within plants.

I can describe the plant life cycle, especially the importance of flowers.

Topic News
This half term we will be learning all about the Ancient Greeks in our Groovy Greeks topic!  The children have already begun by running in a Marathon Challenge and they are looking forward to learning all about Greek myths & legends, the Greek Gods and the history of the Olympics.

The children will also be learning about ancient Greek art and pottery, especially the history that it reveals.  They will design and make their own Greek pottery using ideas from the events and heroes/heroines they learn about.

Please see the topic web attached for full details of our topic.

Reading
To enable us to hear pupils read individually as often as possible, we would like to ask for more volunteers who could spare some time to hear children read in a morning or afternoon.  If you are able to help please contact Mrs Caballero or leave your details at the office and we can arrange a suitable time.  Your help would be very much appreciated!

Below are your child’s reading targets – these will be worked on in individual reading, guided reading and whole class reading activities:

Could

I can ask questions to improve my understanding of the text.

Should

I can predict what might happen from details stated and implied.

Must

I can infer characters’ thoughts and feelings based on their actions.

Spelling
To keep spelling days consistent across Key Stage 2, we will be changing our spelling test day to Mondays beginning on Monday 16th November.  We will still hand out the new spellings on Wednesdays.  Can you please ensure your children copy their spellings out carefully as if they copy out mistakes this will mean that they practise the mistake and not the correct spelling.  Thank you for your continued support in helping your child to learn these new words.

Maths Targets
Your children are now well on their way to learning their bronze, silver and gold times tables and we would like to encourage them to keep practicing as they will help your child with their fluency in all areas of maths.  Once they are learned they will be useful throughout their education so it’s worth investing the time to learn them now!  If any more people would like to volunteer to test pupils on their times tables this would also be appreciated.  Don’t worry, we provide all the questions and answers!

Bronze = Recite the times table e.g One ten is ten
Silver = Answer random questions e.g What are two tens? What is the product of six and ten?
Gold = Answer a related division question e.g What is sixty divided by ten?

This interactive BBC game is very useful in helping children to link the individual times tables facts together: http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/game/ma13tabl-game-tables-grid-find

Science Targets

Can I describe how a sound is made?

Can I explain how sound travels from a source to our ears?

Can I explain the place of vibration in hearing?

Can I explore the correlation between the pitch and the object producing the sound?

Can I explore the correlation between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it?

Can I describe what happens to a sound as it travels away from its source?

Times table challenge

Congratulations to the children who have already gained a bronze, silver or gold sticker on their charts.  If you would like to know which times tables your child is working on, please ask him or her to ask for a copy of their times table chart.

It is the National Expectation that:

  • Children in YEAR 3 will know their 2s,5s and 10s (from Year 2) and their 3s and 4s by the end of the year.  They should also be able to count in 4s, 8s, 50s and 100s by the end of the year.  To be clear, this means that children in YEAR 3 should know the multiplication and division facts for the 10s,2s,5s,3s and 4s by the end of the year.
  • Children in YEAR 4 will know their 2s,5s,10s,3s and 4s (from previous years) and ALL of the rest of their times tables by the end of the year.  To be clear, this means that children in YEAR 4 should be able to recall ALL of the multiplication and division facts up to 12x12 by the end of the year.

As I am sure you understand, the more the children can learn in Year 3 the better and the more children in both years can work on their tables at the home the better they will become!

Good luck Year 3 and 4! Keep working on your times table challenge charts.

Autumn 1 newsletter

Topic News
Our topic for this half term will be ‘Welcome to Yorkshire’.  This topic is all about Yorkshire – it looks at the Geography and some history associated with Yorkshire and some of the traditions and environmental issues Yorkshire faces in 2015.

We will also be working on building our own model bridges in DT – please let us know if you or anyone in your family has any kind of engineering, architectural or structural building expertise – it would be fantastic to invite you/them into school to share some knowledge with the children!

We will be going on a trip to Rother Valley to learn more about the environmental impact the park.  The children will also be learning more about the facilities and tourist attractions at the park.

Please see the topic web attached for full details of our topic.

Reading
Please note that in Year 3 and 4 we do not always hear children read individually on a daily basis.  Reading is often more about guided group reading – this is where children are heard to read in small groups according to ability.  Guided reading gives children valuable opportunities to share their ideas and to discuss the books they are reading with other children and the teacher.  Reading also takes place daily within English lessons and during register time.  Your child may still read individually to an adult but this may not be as frequently as in Infants.  If you need to send a message to school or have any questions about reading, please write a note or pop in rather than writing in your child’s reading record book as we do not check these as frequently as in Infants.  Your child will become responsible for his/her own reading record and will write his/her own  books and page numbers in this in order to develop independence and reading maturity as they get older.

Your child will be bringing home a list of books he/she may want to read from our Reading Pro assessments in the next few weeks.

Below are your child’s reading targets – these will be worked on in individual reading, guided reading and whole class reading activities:

Could

I can locate information using skimming, scanning and text marking.

Should

I can read out loud confidently, understanding how to use a range of punctuation

Must

I can retell some of the stories that I am familiar with orally

Spelling
Spelling test words will be sent home on Fridays and tested on Wednesdays. Spelling test marks will be recorded, by your child, in the back of his/her reading record book.  We will begin spelling work next week.

Maths Targets
Children have maths targets for each unit of work in their maths books.  Please help your child at home to learn his/her times tables – they are really important throughout Key Stage 2.  We will be testing your child on his/her tables soon and they will work to achieve their bronze, silver and gold award for each number.

Bronze = Recite the times table e.g One ten is ten

Silver = Answer random questions e.g What are two tens? What is the product of six and ten?

Gold = Answer a related division question e.g What is sixty divided by ten?

A useful website which is tablet friendly is  ‘www.topmarks.co.uk’ -> click on learning games -> multiplication and division ->play the first game ‘ hit the button’. This game allows you to choose your own multiplication tables to practice and encourages them to beat their own score.

Science Targets

Can I identify and name appliances that require electricity to function?

Can I construct a series circuit?

Can I identify and name the components in a series circuit?

Can I draw a circuit diagram?

Can I describe the function of a switch in a circuit?

Can I describe the difference between a conductor and an insulator, giving examples of each?

Homework
Homework tasks will be set every Friday.  We expect all homework to be returned to school by Wednesday unless otherwise stated, this includes online homework.  Homework should be placed in the homework tray.  In addition to the set tasks, we expect that children will be working on their times tables and reading regularly at home. Below is a homework timetable for this half term so that you know what homework your child should have brought home.

We expect children to take responsibility for remembering to bring their homework home and for asking for another copy of the homework if they have lost the original.  Below is a timetable for homework for our class:
