Autumn 2018 Newsletter

Welcome back Amazing Amigos!  I hope that you have had a lovely Summer holiday and are now refreshed and ready to take on the challenges of Year 4!

We have had a busy start to the week, learning our new model text – ‘Theseus and the Minotaur’.

This will give us the techniques, language and grammar skills needed to write our own magnificent myths, as well as launching our new topic – Groovy Greeks!

To help us develop our reading skills, we would like to ask you to hear your child read for 10 minutes at least 3 times a week and sign their reading record.  This can be their class book or a book from their Lexiled reading list, which can be found by logging into Reading Pro.  We appreciate your support with this, we know how busy life can be but those extra reading sessions will help your children to achieve their highest potential.  As a reward for reading regularly, each child will be awarded a sticker for each day that they read.  If they get 30 stickers this half term, then they will be invited to our ‘Rocking Reading Party at the end of the half-term!  You can do it Amazing Amigos!

In maths, we will continue our Place Value topic by learning how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.  This will be followed by learning how to count in Roman Numerals, so please keep a look out for examples of these for us to practise on!  Then we will focus on practical and formal methods of addition and subtraction of numbers up to 1000.

Finally, I hope that our children have a wonderful year and it is a pleasure to be working with you all!

Spellings will be handed out on a Wednesday to be tested the following Monday.  Children can then take their books home so that you can see their results but they must have their book back in school every Monday.  Last year we made the decision to send 6 spellings home instead of 10 so that pupils can put extra effort into learning them and doing their best on their spelling test – you can do it Amazing Amigos!

This week I am sending home a copy of the words that children need to be able to spell correctly in Years 3 & 4.  Some of these will be sent home for the spelling tests but you may want to work through them with your child over the year as they will be tested on them in July.

Water Bottles & PE Kit

Children are encouraged to bring drinks bottles to school with water so they can have a drink in class.

This half term, outdoor PE will be on a Tuesday afternoon and indoor on a Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure your child has appropriate kit in school on these days or they will not be permitted to take part.  Long hair must be tied back and jewellery (including earrings) should be removed.

Parent Helpers

We now have a volunteer to hear readers in our class however we still need more help to give our children as many opportunities to read as possible.  We would also be grateful if anyone would be able to test pupils on their times tables – we will give you a sheet with the answers on so don’t worry if you’re rusty!  Even 20 minutes would be appreciated so please get in touch.
